Testimonials

I know this district, and what it takes to be an effective board member.

In my conversations with Doug I have learned that he is passionate about public education and serving the community. He is a tireless volunteer, having served in various capacities in his children’s schools, taking a leadership role in PTA, and as a member of a district-wide committee in the Fremont Union High School District. In addition to volunteering in schools, he has also served on the Sustainability Commission for the City of Sunnyvale. Doug regularly attends CUSD Board meetings, and he is the only person who attended our Board Candidates Information Night, where he posed many insightful questions about serving students and many other district operations. It is clear that Doug will always put students first in his decisions.

I have served CUSD for 61 years total, as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and 17 years on the board. I think it’s someone else’s turn now, and I believe that Doug is the perfect choice! I’m happy to endorse and support Doug Kunz’s candidacy for governing board member in the Cupertino Union School District.

I met Doug through our work on the Cupertino-Fremont-Sunnyvale Council of PTA’s (CFSCPTA) 4 years ago. He is an ideal candidate for CUSD School Board Trustee because his dedication to the success and well-being of all students is evident through his proactive engagement in the many school volunteer roles he has held. During his time as PTA President, he demonstrated an empathetic approach and ability to understand and respect the diverse needs of our community. In his role on the CTAD committee, Doug displayed exceptional communication skills, allowing him to convey ideas clearly and listen actively to others. He has the highest standards of integrity, commitment, and open-mindedness. His decision-making is always informed and balanced, ensuring that all perspectives are considered. As the VP of Advocacy at the CFSCPTA, Doug has exhibited familiarity with policy governance, legal frameworks, and strategic planning, which would enable him to set and achieve long-term goals for the district. He also understands budgeting and fiscal responsibility, which is critical for our district and ensuring sound financial management for the future. He knows our schools and the community well and has a long history of significant and positive impact in our school district. In summary, Doug’s combination of personal qualities, skills, and experience make him an excellent candidate for the CUSD Board of Education Trustee. I wholeheartedly endorse his candidacy and hope you will give him one of your 2 votes.

Doug Kunz is the ideal candidate for the CUSD Board of Education. I have had the pleasure of working alongside him for the past two years on the PTA, witnessing his tireless advocacy for our schools and community. Doug understands the challenges facing our district. His ability to bring people together, listen to diverse perspectives, and find common ground will serve him well as a trustee. He brings a collaborative spirit and a deep commitment to public education. I urge all voters to support Doug Kunz for the CUSD Board of Education.

Doug Kunz is a superstar where active transportation is concerned. He is a staunch supporter of Safe Routes to School (SRTS): he was Chair of SRTS for 4 years at his children’s elementary school. He has spoken at Sunnyvale and Cupertino city council meetings in support of active transportation multiple times. As Chair of the Sunnyvale Sustainability Commission, he understands that making our environment safe for biking and walking is key to reducing the 40% of green house gases that cars currently contribute. Doug is thoughtful, conscientious, and respectful.

Doug saved the taxpayers of our school district $500,000 by suggesting that we pursue a grant from Silicon Valley Clean Energy to fund emissions-free heating systems for Vargas Elementary School. His contribution helped us improve our environmental footprint, and our bottom line.

I have enjoyed working with Doug in his capacity as a Scoutmaster, where he patiently encourages youth-led organizational development, offering tactful nudges and advice to help the group steer in the same positive direction. I’ve also witnessed his commitment to public schools and the communities our schools serve through his work on the local PTA council. Doug’s thoughtful approach to problem solving in the dynamic but rules-bound community-based environments of Scouting and PTA will be a great benefit to CUSD.

Doug Kunz is an extraordinary community volunteer. He passionately advocates for students and enhancing the education systems. With his remarkable patience and communication skills, he promotes clarity and collaboration. A true asset to any team!

Having served with Doug on the Sustainability Commission in Sunnyvale, I believe he is the right candidate to guide Cupertino schools towards a brighter (and greener!) future. Doug is well-rounded, community-focused and has the deep skill set to address the myriad issues our public schools face.
